Dr. Nancy chinn
Dr. Nancy Chinn is a faculty member and Acquired Brain Injury Specialist in the Disability Resources Department at Santa Rosa Junior College. A speech-language pathologist with a doctorate in Educational Leadership from University of California Davis, she worked as a clinician in the field of brain injury rehabilitation for the first 12 years of her career before becoming a tenured faculty member at SRJC. Her research on management of concussion in community college athletics has combined her background as a clinician working in the field of brain injury with her interest in the discipline of education. Her subsequent collaboration with Sports Medicine and Dr. Monica Ohkubo has resulted in a concussion management program that has been a model for other colleges, with the SRJC program being awarded the NASPA Excellence Award for Athletics. She was instrumental in the expansion of concussion management to include SRJC club sports. Dr. Chinn has presented on concussion management at both statewide, national and international conferences. In addition to her work with student-athletes, Dr. Chinn is part of the SRJC Veterans Affairs Office serving student-veterans.
Dr. Chinn’s publications include “Concussion Management in Community College Athletics: Revealing and Understanding the Gap Between Knowledge and Practice” and “Concussion Reporting Behaviors of Collegiate Student-athletes and Limits of Transferring Concussion Knowledge during the Stress of Competition.” She is a consultant to Santa Rosa City Schools for the advancement of their concussion management program. Dr. Chinn is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, serves on the Research Review Board for the Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability (JPED) and chairs the AHEAD Research Review Panel. She is a board member for the non-profit North Coast Concussion Management (NCCM).
